Spring Equinox (Ostara): Balance & Growth Spells

As the wheel turns and the earth exhales winter’s final breath, we arrive at the Spring Equinox - Ostara. This sacred sabbat marks the moment when day and night stand in perfect balance, a fleeting pause where light and shadow share the sky as equals. It is a time of awakening, of gentle emergence, and of planting the seeds - literal and metaphorical - that will shape the season ahead.

Ostara is named after the Germanic goddess Eostre, a deity of dawn, fertility, and renewal. Her symbols - hares, eggs, budding flowers - remind us that life is returning, and with it, the invitation to grow. For witches, healers, and seekers, this is a potent time to align with nature’s rhythm and cast spells that honour balance and transformation.

Balance Spell: Embracing the In-Between

Balance is not perfection - it is presence. To honour this equinox, light two candles: one black, one white. Sit between them and breathe deeply. Speak aloud:

“As light and shadow dance as one, I find harmony in all I’ve done.”

Reflect on what feels out of alignment in your life. Are you giving too much? Holding back? Use this ritual to recalibrate your energy. You may wish to journal or pull a tarot card to guide your next steps.

Growth Spell: Planting Intentions

Whether you have a sprawling backyard or a single pot on your windowsill, this is the time to plant with purpose. Choose a seed - basil, calendula, or lavender - and write your intention on a slip of paper. Bury it beneath the soil and water it with moon-charged water for extra oomph. As the seed sprouts, so too will your vision. Speak to your plant often. Let it be a living altar to your growth.

Integrating Witchcraft & Mental Health

Ostara’s energy is gentle yet activating. For those navigating emotional shifts, this sabbat offers a chance to reset. Consider blending your rituals with therapeutic practices:

  • Equinox Journaling: Write about what you’re releasing and what you’re ready to receive, incorporate this with the moons waxing and waning.
  • Nature Walks as Meditation: Observe the signs of spring - buds, birds, warmth - and let them mirror your own inner blooming.

Spring is a beautiful time to invite deep healing. Ostara reminds us that growth doesn’t have to be loud. It can be tender, slow, and sacred. As you move through this season, may you find balance in your becoming, beauty in your blooming, and courage in your growth.

May your spells root deep and rise strong.
