Planting Energetic Seeds in Autumn

Autumn has a very particular energy. Everything starts to slow down, the air gets cooler, and life feels a little quieter. When a new moon arrives in the middle of all that, it creates this really supportive moment for beginning again but not in a dramatic way. In a gentle, steady, “let’s take one small step” kind of way.

The new moon is basically the reset point of the lunar cycle and mid to late autumn mirrors that energy in its own earthy way. Leaves fall, gardens wind down, and the soil becomes a resting place where old plant matter breaks down for nourishment in anticipation for new growth.

When you put those energies together, the lunar reset and the seasonal release, you get a perfect window for planting intentions that don’t need to be rushed. It’s a wonderful opportunity to start small, trust the process, and let things unfold at their own pace.

This gentle autumn energy coupled with the new moon encourages us to stop trying to overhaul our entire lives in one go but instead, to choose one thing that feels doable. That might look like taking ten quiet minutes to yourself in the morning before you engage with the world and checking your phone, choosing one habit to soften in preparation to release or giving yourself permission to rest without guilt.

These little shifts within matter as they build momentum without overwhelming your nervous system.

As autumn is nature’s composting season, where everything that begins to fall away becomes nourishment, we can align with the season and do the same internally. Think about what you’re ready to release or transform. Maybe it’s an old belief, a pattern you’ve outgrown, or a story you’re tired of carrying.

Instead of trying to “get rid” of it, imagine it gently returning to the soil allowing it to naturally break down becoming something useful instead of something heavy.

Following is a simple yet grounded autumn/new moon ritual.

Nothing elaborate, nothing that needs special tools. Just a quiet moment to reset and begin again with an offering from nature.

As the morning awakes or the evening settles choose a spot within your home that feels calm such as your garden, your porch, your altar, or even your kitchen table. Sit with a cup of hot autumn tea such as apple and cinnamon, get all cosy and think on what you are wanting to achieve, what changes you'd like to make and what it looks like moving into the future.

Autumn energy is already slower and softer, so you don’t need to create anything fancy.

Gather an offering from nature such as a leaf, a small stone, or even a pinch of herbs from your pantry. The point is to have something that represents the season and the idea of “planting” or beginning again.

Take a few slow breaths and let your body relax.

Begin to reflect on one small intention.

As previously mentioned, not a big life overhaul, not a dramatic transformation, just something that you believe will be achievable at this time, such as:

  • Creating more space in your mornings
  • Becoming more organised to create ease within your life
  • Wanting to speak to yourself with more kindness
  • To gain the confidence to take one step toward a project you’ve been avoiding

Keep it simple and doable.

Speak your intention aloud or silently while holding your natural item within your hands. As you speak your intention, feel the energy building and flowing through your hands into the natural object imagining it as a seed full of potential.

You’re not forcing anything to happen, you are acknowledging what you want to achieve, acknowledging that you are ready to achieve it and asking for assistance to take the steps to create change.

Visualise what your intention will look like when it is realised.

Thank the season, the moon, your ancestors and yourself for showing up and working this magick as holding gratitude will anchor the ritual and signal that you’re ready to move forward.

Place your natural item somewhere meaningful where you will look upon it regularly such as upon your altar, your bedside table or your work station, as this is your symbolic planting and you want it somewhere you will look upon it often.

Maintain your magick by adding energy to it often by touching it while visualising your intention, lighting a candle near it to fuel the magick and taking action that aligns with what you planted.

Autumn and the new moon both remind us that beginnings don’t have to be loud or dramatic.

Sometimes the most powerful changes start quietly, in the dark, long before anyone else can see them.
